Keeping Cool When the Heat Is On: Summer Survival Tips for Families ☀️
Let’s be honest - summer with little ones is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand we love to see the sunshine and blue skies! On the other hand, parents and carers sometimes find themselves dealing with overheated toddlers, nap resistance, and a constant search for shade like you're starring in your own survival show.
So how do we keep the everyone happy during the hot summer months? Here are our top cool tips for navigating the heat with babies and young children (and maybe keeping your sanity, too):
1. Shade is your new best friend
Whether it’s a big floppy sunhat, a parasol, or that tree in the park that suddenly looks like prime real estate, embrace the shade. It’s your shady sanctuary! And don’t forget a breathable cover for the buggy - air flow is key. Babies aren’t great at regulating their temperature, so keeping them out of direct sun is one of the best ways to prevent overheating.
2. Hydration nation!
Water, milk, breastfeeds - whatever your little ones are drinking, offer it often. Even if they don’t seem thirsty, those tiny bodies dehydrate quickly. Bonus points if you can make it fun with brightly coloured cups or homemade fruity ice lollies, (you can call it a snack and a hydration hack in one).
3. Dress smart, not heavy
Less is definitely more when it comes to baby summer fashion. Lightweight, breathable, natural fabrics are your go-to, and lucky for you, we know just the thing 😉. Our bamboo clothing and essentials are naturally moisture-wicking and breathable, helping to keep your little ones cooler and drier when temperatures soar. Try our Rompers for comfortable day and nighttime wear.
Don’t forget to take a hat for your little one wherever you go. Our Rosa and Blue Bucket Hats feature a clever reversible design so you can choose between super absorbent cotton towelling or moisture-wicking bamboo.
4. Timing is everything
If you are out in the heat of the day, just be aware that UV levels can soar during the warm summer months, and toddlers' delicate skin can burn in as little as 10 minutes. Remember to use a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ suncream and reapply often, especially if they are splashing in sprinkler or swimming in pools.
Try to plan outdoor play or errands for the cooler parts of the day though if you can - think early mornings or evenings, when the sun is a little more forgiving (and everyone’s a little less sticky). Midday heat? That may be your cue to slow down, snuggle up somewhere shady, and maybe even sneak in a nap. You and them!
5. Don’t sweat the small stuff
Literally and figuratively. Summer with young kids is chaotic, unpredictable, and gloriously messy. So if they’ve had watermelon for lunch three days in a row and are still wearing yesterday’s pyjamas in the daytime (we really don’t think that matters with Rosa and Blue pyjamas by the way!) ... you’re doing great.
What about sleep?
As we head into summer, sleepwear choices get even more important when considering how to regulate our baby’s and children’s body temperatures. Those warmer nights can make for tricky bedtime decisions. The tog (thermal overall grade) of your baby’s sleeping bag can make a big difference in keeping them comfortable overnight.
Our Rosa & Blue muslin sleeping bags are thoughtfully designed to grow with your little one - fitting beautifully from 3 months (use the side poppers for a snug fit) to 2 years, so you don’t need to worry about constant sizing updates. One less thing on your to-do list? Yes, please.
